Ever since the release of ChatGPT, digital marketers have been testing this revolutionary technology to find ways to benefit their businesses. However, we’ve quickly learned that there are right – and wrong – ways to use AI.
AI and ChatGPT are here, and it’s not going away soon. ChatGPT surpassed one million users within five days of launching and 100 billion users within two months, making it one of the fastest-growing applications. In today’s fast-paced digital marketing landscape, marketers constantly need to adapt to new technologies, and ChatGPT is one of them.
The use cases for the new technology are almost endless, but I want to walk through a few examples of Chat GPT marketing prompts that will save you time and get the results you want.
This blog post will provide examples and prompts on the best ways to use ChatGPT for marketing, as well as ChatGPT examples.
What is ChatGPT?
Before we get too far, what exactly is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is AI technology that lets you engage in conversations that feel natural and human-like. The tool can respond to inquiries almost instantly, supporting you and your business in many ways, such as research and planning, content recommendations, and coding.
The biggest difference – and most revolutionary part – of ChatGPT is how conversational it is. You can enter a question without any formatting or context, and ChatGPT will give you a thorough answer.
- Want to find the top 5 pizza spots in your area? ChatGPT can give you its recommendations.
- Need to add some professional flare to a work email? It will generate updated text based on your prompt.
- Need to write a landing page with FAQ schema? ChatGPT can do that, plus write code that you can use
While ChatGPT does many things well, it should not be relied on completely. Some of the information behind ChatGPT can be outdated or completely incorrect, so consistently verifying the output is essential.
How to Use Chat GPT in Digital Marketing
There are many benefits of ChatGPT to help out with everyday work-related tasks. It can save a lot of time in a day with tasks like research and content and provide in-depth analysis.
Below are a few of the Chat GPT best examples we’ve used firsthand.
Writing Ad Copy
One of the best ways to use ChatGPT is to inspire fresh ideas for copywriting, especially if you are struggling with writer’s block. As a senior paid media analyst, I must create new ads for various clients in different industries almost daily. ChatGPT allows me to brainstorm and come up with unique angles. Since we’ve begun using AI our client’s have seen CTR’s improve by 72% on average.
ChatGPT also helps me research unfamiliar industries and can help me think of and understand the complexities to consider.
At first, our team was skeptical about using it. But after sharing our thoughts, we agreed that any tool that helps us to save time during our work day is a tool we should be using and is now considered a best practice for ad building for our team.
Here are a few ChatGPT marketing prompts we use for ad copywriting:
Prompt: “Provide ad copy headlines under 30 characters for [company], which is a company that [description of company and/or service].
It can even recommend image examples if you need some ideas!
Keep in mind that it won’t always keep the phrases under the character limit in the prompt, so you may need to do some editing and alterations, but again, this is a great way to fast pass tedious content creativity tasks like ad copy.

Gaining Clarity on a Customer’s Buying Journey
ChatGPT can also be used to understand a customer’s buying journey and can help with strategic planning or finding keywords to use in paid media campaigns.
Here’s an example of a prompt we’ve used for understanding the buying journey:
Prompt: “Give me a list of 10 keywords ordered from start of research to end of research for an individual buying a pair of running shoes.”
Not only was I given an accurate representation and better understanding of a step-by-step list of an individual typing these phrases into a search engine, but also keywords to insert into a Google Search campaign advertising running shoes.
Using ChatGPT for Competition Research
ChatGPT can be trained to research and analyze data about your competitors. This can include their products, company size, where their headquarters is, and more. This can help you gather and interpret data for insights for strategic decision-making a lot faster.
ChatGPT can also deliver answers in different formats besides the traditional conversation response. If you ask ChatGPT to provide answers in a table, it can give you a formatted table with the data you’re looking for. Here’s an example of how we use it when doing research:
Prompt: “Please create a list of competitors to [company name or url]. List the company’s name, the location of its headquarters, the size of the company (small, medium, or large), and whether they are a direct or indirect competitor. Please compile the results in a table format.”
Once you get the data back, you’ll want to research to ensure these companies are legitimate and still operating. ChatGPT’s research only goes until September 2021, so some information may be outdated.

Generating a Hypothesis Summary
One of the more complex marketing use cases is directing ChatGPT to generate a hypothetical situation. This is the best situation to push the boundaries of ChatGPT’s capabilities and provides a high level of insight.
Here’s an example of a prompt we used:
“In this LinkedIn advertising experiment, we tested the hypotheses that segmenting audiences for LinkedIn would achieve a higher conversion rate. We found that segmenting the audience did indeed result in a 25% increase in conversion rate.”
This is a basic hypothetical example to enter, but be as creative and specific as possible based on a given situation to get a more in-depth response related to metrics.
Goal Setting
Whether creating monthly, quarterly, or annual goals, ChatGPT can be used for that also. You can receive more realistic results by including specific metrics such as conversions, sessions, and impressions into the prompts.
By creating a prompt by adding in a company’s business name, spending based on a given timeline, and specified metric numbers, you can get a good starting point for goal setting.
Best Practices for Using ChatGPT for Marketing
Here are some of the best practices we’ve learned and adopted as we continue using ChatGPT marketing prompts in our jobs. Overall we’ve found the most success by embracing the power of AI with human expertise by using AI as virtual assistants.
- Review Generated Text
- Start With A Narrow Scope
- Combine it with Human Support
- Provide Clear Guidance
- Utilize, but Don’t Depend
Review Generated Text
When using AI, you must review the generated text every time. ChatGPT is imperfect and can make mistakes or provide inaccurate responses. Always check generated text to ensure content is accurate and, most importantly, appropriate.
After generating a response, it is possible to give that specific response a thumbs up or down based on whether you deem the information sufficient.
Start With A Narrow Scope
Start a chat by using a narrow scope first and slowly progressing your messages. Training ChatGPT will allow it to understand better and create a more effective dataset.
Once you’ve established a solid foundation with a narrow scope, you can gradually expand the scope of the prompts and train the model to handle more complex inputs.
Something to consider is that ChatGPT doesn’t ‘remember’ past conversations once they have ended. Each conversation is treated as a separate and independent interaction.
Combine It with Human Support
ChatGPT doesn’t always understand the nuance of complex issues or provide a human element of empathy and emotional feeling. By training it with personally relatable components, a few message variations should give it enough to work with to get a decent response.

Provide Clear Guidance
Clear guidance can help ensure that ChatGPT understands the specific prompt and includes relevant context or background information that may be necessary to generate an accurate response. This is especially important for complex or technical inquiries.
By providing clear guidance on tone, style, methodology, and/or design, you can ensure that the responses generated by ChatGPT align with your company’s brand values and messaging.
Unclear
Clear
Utilize it, but Don’t Depend on it
When using ChatGPT for business purposes, it is crucial to remember that as an expert in your field, your knowledge and experience offer a level of understanding and nuance that no AI tool can fully replicate.
Being able to intertwine expert human knowledge with the support of AI can be a valuable power to harness if done the right way, but AI should never be entirely relied upon to do all of the heavy lifting.
