Google’s Matt Cutts – Top 5 Biggest SEO Mistakes by Volume

Recently Matt Cutts, Google’s Head of Webspam, published a video where he answered the question:

“What are the top 3-5 areas where webmasters make the most mistakes?”

In answering the question, Cutts didn’t go off on some rant about super advanced mistakes. Instead he identified the biggest mistakes by volume. Here they are:

1) Not having a website (AT ALL!) or having a website that Google’s spider can’t crawl is the biggest mistake he sees.

2) Not including the right words on the page. Here is the example he gives: instead of using “Mt. Everest Elevation” as a keyword – use “How high is Mt. Everest?” – because that is how people search.

3) Don’t get into a “link building” mindset, think about creating compelling content that will get shared and picked up by others – thus creating the links you want and need.

4) Don’t overlook the title and description of your most important pages.

5) Not using free online resources to learn about how Google works and what SEO is about.

These 5 mistakes are simple SEO blocking and tackling and i’m amazed that they are still so prevalent.

Time to get back to the basics folks! Here is the video.
